OVERCOMING THE MORNING

About a month ago, I read a post on one of my favorite blogs, The Champagne Diet, about the importance of developing a consistent high-end morning routine.  As someone that battles insomnia, my mornings are often extremely difficult and characterized by lethargy, grumpiness, and the overwhelming feeling that I’m often leaving something behind when I run out the house looking like a chicken with her head cut off.  And considering I have a five minute commute to work, you would think I should always be on time, but that just means in my head that I get extra sleep time.  Needless to say, my mornings are nowhere near as productive or meaningful as they should be, especially considering that I am currently balancing at least 5 projects that all need my attention on most days.

Earlier this year, I decided that I would start to implement a static morning routine into my day.  As I become more spiritual, I envisioned my day starting off with prayer, maybe reading an inspirational blog post, oil pulling, a cup of hot tea in lieu of coffee (just personal preference), and the mapping out of my day to make sure I didn’t miss any of the nuances associated with being a career woman and business owner at the same damn time.  But I must tell the truth and say, it was an epic fail.  Somehow my battle with the snooze button and getting an extra 45 minutes of sleep overpowered my will to start off my morning not being the Wicked Witch (with a B) of the West.  Even my students know that my “niceness” doesn’t start to settle in until at least 10 am.  There were a couple of days where I found time to sneak in a quick prayer in the morning before running out of the house hoping my shoes matched, but all in all, I failed, epically.  However, I noticed on the handful of days in which I was successful, my day seemed to run much smoother, and I arrived at work feeling more refreshed and ready to conquer my day.

Needless to say, we are now in the last quarter, and here I am again attempting to master the same goal with an additional business project sitting on my lap.  But let’s be realistic, I’ve been the Snooze Queen for 30 years, and some things don’t change overnight.  And my bed and I have built the kind of relationship I aspire to one day have with my husband, we understand each other and mesh seamlessly.  I might even venture to say we love each other.  Yet, I realize that as I add more tasks and brilliant business ideas to my plate, a rushed and non-productive morning is no longer conducive to my success.

So, in these final days of October, let’s all commit to a more positive start to our day through implementing a morning routine.  If it’s only waking up an additional 30 minutes to read something positive or to say a little prayer, who couldn’t use an extra morning boost to propel you through hours of answering emails, fulfilling orders, teaching to America, securing new business deals, answering phone calls, or whatever you do throughout the course of the day to validate your pay.  I’m committing  to 30 days of waking up earlier and immersing myself in positivity (that means NO news coverage with the exception of the weather), even if I have to drag my own self out of bed by my hair.  And you know what they say, it only takes 30 days to form a habit.

Morning.

Do you have a successful morning routine?  If so, what does it consist of and how do you remain consistent?  Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.  And if you’re looking for thoughts and tips, check out the blog that helped to change my mindset by clicking this link.
